How to care for your new bra

December 5th, 2008 Posted in Bra Resources No Comments »

Every women knows how expensive a good bra can be these days. When you may be paying $60.00 or more for a good bra, you want to make sure your bra looks good, and fits well for as long as possible. So how do you properly care for this costly underwear investment?
First, always read the tag and follow manufactures care instructions. While most bras care instructions state they can be machine or hand washed, some manufactures of bras made from materials such as silk suggest only dry cleaning. Dry cleaning may also be suggested for lace bras.
Although most bras tags state they can be machine washed, this method will quickly cause the bras to lose their elasticity and therefore their comfort. Hand washing can be a pain, but it is also the best way to extend the life of your bra. When hand washing use cool water and a mild detergent such as Woolite or Forever New, then line dry. Never use bleach, wring dry or expose lingerie to dryer heat.
If you decide to machine wash Close the clasps before washing. Most bras have clasps on them, whether they attach in the front or back. These have a tendency to catch on other items in the wash. Put bras in a zip-up, net bag (sometimes called a lingerie bag or ball) that separates them from other items in the wash. This will prevent snagging. You can then wash bras at the same time as other items in your washing machine. Wash your bras in cold or warm water on the gentle cycle of the washing machine. Make sure as with any other items you launder that the items are of compatible colors. If you wash a red bra with a number of white bras you may end up with a selection of pink, polka-dotted, or tie-dyed clothing. Try to wash bras with fabrics of a similar weight. Jeans and towels are much heavier than bras. T-shirts, underwear, socks and pajamas are better choices for filling up that load. Lastly reshape the bra if it has foam or batting in the cups and line dry.
Even with good care experts say an everyday bra should be replaced every 6 to 12 months while bras worn less frequently may last 2 to 3 years. Therefore it makes sense to take good care of that new bra, for the sake of lasting comfort and for the sake of your pocketbook.

How to Select a Plus Size Sports Bra

November 24th, 2008 Posted in Bra Resources No Comments »

As much attention should be given to selecting a good plus size sports bra as is given to selecting any other important piece of athletic equipment.  Besides the pain and discomfort from the lack of proper support, you may also be causing yourself permanent damage. The Coopers ligament from which the breasts are suspended can become permanently stretched causing the breast to sag.  This condition is irreversible

A good plus size sports bra is designed to prevent discomfort and damage by minimizing movement, especially vertical movement.  These bras differ from other bras in both type of material used, and design.  Where regular bras are made with more emphasis on fashion, sports bras are designed more functionally to limit breast movement and displace moisture.

There are two main types of sports bras compression and encapsulated.

Compression sports bras tend to work better for smaller chested women, below a C cup.  These bras reduce breast movement by compression or flattening the breasts against the chest wall.

Encapsulation sports bras are recommended for larger chested women, a C cup and above.  These bras are designed to reduce movement by separating the breasts and supporting each one individually.

Some other design features which may be helpful are things such as strap design, material, seams, and fasteners.  You will find the most support is provided by the cross-backed and T-back style straps.  Materials with a higher percentage of spandex, 15% to 20%  tend to give better support.  Cup seams should be minimal to reduce chaffing.  Also look for plush-backed hooks for added comfort.

Sports bras will begin to loose their elasticity over time and sould be replaced on average every 6 to 12 months.  You can extend the life of your bra by hand washing and line drying.

What are the Different Bra Types?

November 19th, 2008 Posted in Bra Resources 1 Comment »

By the turn of the century the modern bra had begun to take shape as corset designers began to experiment with separating this garment into two parts, the bottom girdle and the top to be known as the bra. An undergarment which originally had only a functional purpose to prevent backaches and sagging breasts, has grown through the last hundred years into a multi-billion dollar industry, which today is as much about fashion as it is form. Manufactures now offer bras in a wide variety of styles and materials, many of which are listed below.

  1. Bandeau:  Manufactured from a strapless elastic piece or knit fabric. This bra provides little support. Not a sports bra
  2. Training Bra. For developing teens or preteens.  Available in smaller sizes than standard and has no wires.
  3. Full Cup Bra. A good bra for women with bigger breasts. This bra covers most the breast and provides good support.
  4. Demi Cup Bra. As the name states this bra covers the breast to an area just above the nipple. It can be supportive and is designed to be worn under clothes with plunging necklines.
  5. Padded Bra. Comes with increased padding in the cups giving the illusion of increased breast size.
  6. Strapless Bra. Has no straps or ones which can be removed.  Made to be worn with off the shoulder fashions.
  7. Underwire Bra. With the support coming from heavy gauge wire, or plastic which runs beneath the cup, some women find these bras uncomfortable.  Many women with large breast like the extra support these bras provide.
  8. Seamless. Made without seamed cups, it is very much like the T-shirt bra in that it was made to be worn under tight fitting clothes
  9. Convertible Bra. Named because its detachable straps allow it to be worn with such clothing as backless dresses and halter tops.
  10. Minimizer Bra
  11. T-Shirt Bra. Basically a bra with no raised seams or wires which would show under a tightly fitting T-shirt
  12. Push-up Bra. Designed with extra padding to lift and push the breasts together giving a fuller look to all breast sizes.
  13. Shelf Bra. Covers just the lower portion of the breast.
  14. Peephole Bra. Bra that exposes the nipple.
  15. Maternity Bra. These bras allow for more adjustments that are necessary through pregnancy.
  16. Nursing Bra. Allow the breast to be exposed through flap to allow for breastfeeding while still providing support.
  17. Sports Bra. Used to minimize movement during athletic activities which may be harmful.  Usually made from a stretch material.  They can come with or without wires
  18. Mastectomy Bras. Manufactured to keep a breast prosthesis in place for women who have lost one or both breast.
  19. Racerback Bras. Defined by the straps that join in the back as a Y or T.
  20. Balconette Bras. Half cut bras which cover about 3/4 of the breast giving the illusion of cleavage.
  21. Built-in Bra. As the name implies these are bras which are built into clothing such as tube tops and swimsuits.

Are you wearing the right band and cup size?

November 18th, 2008 Posted in Bra Resources No Comments »

Some studies have estimated that up to 85% of women are wearing the wrong bra size, and 60% don't know what there bra size is.  Wearing the wrong band or cup size is not only uncomfortable it can lead to back pain, headaches, breast pain and rashes.   Signs that your band size is to big are :

  1. The bra moves around you body easily and tends to hike up your back.  Your bra band should be horizontal to the floor and fit around the body snugly.
  2. If your band is to loose your straps tend to fall off your shoulders.  Pulling up on your shoulder straps should cause the bra to tighten around your back.  If it lifts up easily the band is to large.
  3. If you can fasten the bra in the front and slide it into position comfortably again the band may be to loose.
  4. You feel your straps digging in could also be a sign your band is to big.  Your straps should only support about 10% of the weight.
  5. If your fist fits loosely under you back strap.

Signs you are wearing the wrong cup size are:

  1. There is wrinkling at the tip, bra may be to small.
  2. There is wrinkling in the cup , the bra may be to big.
  3. If you are overflowing your bra.  No amount of breast tissue should be spilling out.
  4. If the bras underwires do not lie flat against the sternum or are poking you, the bra may be to small.

Many bra fitting experts believe you should re-evaluate you fit particularly if you have gained or lost weight, or have had a baby.
